Book Review -- Sherlock Holmes & Mr Hyde

--Contains Spoilers--

First, let me say that I like Sherlock Holmes pastiches. That makes me a pariah with some Holmesians, but I like them just the same. That said, I am the first to admit that they are decidedly a mixed bag. Some are wonderful, some are dreadful; most fall somewhere in between in the 'pretty good' category.

I picked up Sherlock Holmes & Mr Hyde by Christian Klaver because I had credit at the book store and nothing else there worked for me that day. But I do like crossovers with other Victorian fiction, so it seemed worth a try. If I'd realized at the time it was the second book in the series, I might've paused, but probably would've taken it anyway. I've begun series in the middle before, and, as I said, there was little else to choose from.

It wasn't hard to gather the threads of what had happened in book 1. However, the world Mr Klaver created there is so complex, he has to spend paragraph upon paragraph expaining it to the reader. This doesn't make for entertaining reading for the new reader, and I can't imagine how tedious it would be for those familiar with the first volume.

That was difficult to put up with, but there are other things I find harder to endure. Excepting Holmes and Watson, the good characters are portrayed as evil and the evil characters as good. Vampires, werewolves, even Hyde himself, are clearly meant by the author to be sympathetic, which doesn't work for me at all. I like my heroes flawed, but good, and my villains multi-faceted, but evil. And I think it shows a lot of cheek to take a classic like The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and say that Stevenson got it all wrong. Nope, doesn't work for me at all.

I suggest you read Loren Estelman's Dr Jekyll and Mr Holmes instead. In my opinion, it does more justice to both the original sources.

The Disney Afternoon: The Making of a Television Renaissance

The Disney Afternoon: The Making of a Television Renaissance, a new book by Jake S. Friedman, has been pending for years. Its debut has been delayed over and over again, for reasons unknown to the public, in spite of the fervent desire from fans to get their hands on it, present company included.

Just in case it never sees the light of day (a fate worse than death!), here are some images from Mr. Friedman's own website to amp up the yearning:

The Disney Afternoon's Darkwing Duck can be found at Whatsits Galore.

Great Mouse Detective Books

I am a great fan of Disney coffee table books. Sadly, there has never been a "Making of..." or "Art of..." book published for Disney's Great Mouse Detective. When your favourite film is one of Disney's Forgotten Few, you have to make do with a mention or photo here and there instead of a complete volume. And I've bought many a book just hoping there would be a page or two concerning my fave. Sometimes I'm rewarded, sometimes disappointed.

Here is a list of Disney books that contain, in my humble opinion, significant Great Mouse Detective content. Enough, at least, to please this fan.

Disney Who's Who (any edition)

Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters (any edition)

My Very First Disney ABC Word Book

Disney Dossiers

Disney Treasury of Children's Classics

Disney's Lost Chords, vol. 2

They Drew As They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Early Renaissance

The Ultimate Disney Trivia Book, vol. 1

Drawn to Life: 20 Golden Years of Disney Master Classics, vol. 1

The Disney Villain

Mouse in Transition

Disney's Dogs

Mouse Under Glass

Disney's Animation Magic

The Art of Walt Disney

Layout & Background

Drawing 100 Years of Disney Wonder

Disney Recipes

Two Guys Named Joe

List of the Top 3 Sherlock Holmes Pastiches

When we speak of pastiche in the literary world, we refer to a story written by an author using the characters and style of another author. And no one has more pastiches written about him than Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Some are quite excellent. Some are hideously bad. Most fall somewhere in between. Here is a list of our top three:

  1. "The Adventure of the Field Theorems" by Vonda N. McIntyre
    from Sherlock Holmes In Orbit
This short story just seems to have it all
  2. "The Adventure of the Deptford Horror" by Adrian Conan Doyle & John Dickson Carr
from The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes
An intensely creepy short story worth reading and re-reading
  3. "The Madness of Colonel Warburton" by Carole Buggé
    from Resurrected Holmes
Not sure why we like this tale intended to mimic Dashiell Hammett instead of Conan Doyle; call it a guilty pleasure

Although no pastiche could possibly take the place of the original canon of stories as written by Sir Arthur Conana Doyle, there are those of us who can't resist a new tale of the world's greatest detective. But the sheer number of extra-canonical writings is enormous, making it impossible for anyone to compile a truly complete list. Which doesn't stop some of us from trying.

Half.com Is Closing Soon!

Half.com, one of the best sites for buying and selling books, movies, music, and video games, is closing its virtual doors, announced eBay, the site's parent company. They nearly closed once before, several years ago, but the outrage expressed by customers changed the minds of the powers that be. If you care about this most useful site, now would be the time to drop them a line (and eBay, too) expressing your concern. Otherwise, August 31st will be the final day of operation. In any case, you should probably head over to Half to do some shopping before it's too late.

Jungle Book Glitches

Bloopers, goofs, and mistakes from Disney's animated classic film:

Mowgli pulls a stick out of nowhere when throwing rocks at the waterfall, but it soon vanishes.

A different elephant is next to Sonny when the herd halts for Col. Hathi's inspection.

After Col. Hathi breaks his riding crop, it is shown repaired, then broken again.

Baloo grows a thumb whenever he needs one.

Baloo tells Mowgli to scratch his left shoulder; when the man-cub scratches the right shoulder, Baloo says that's the spot. More...

Mangani: the Language of Tarzan

You may know that the word tarzan means white skin in Mangani. Tarzan is the only human being able to speak the language of the Great Apes...until now. You, too, can learn to speak like a Mangani. Whatsits Galore presents here a dictionary of Mangani words, direct from the novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, which will prove beneficial to linguists and anyone else who may find himself in the jungles of Africa any time in the future.

William Clarke Russell's Sea Stories

In The adventure of the Five Orange-Pips, Dr. Watson enjoys a novel by William Clarke Russell. Sherlock Holmes collectors might be interested to see this vintage copy of one of Russell's sea-stories, The Frozen Pirate. Granted, the binding is damaged, but the age of this book makes it at least possible that it once graced Dr. Watson's own library. This particular volume was published in America, which just might be one of the three continents of which the good doctor boasts a knowledge. More...

The Off The Record Guide to Disney's Great Mouse Detective

If you spend much time searching the Amazon website, you may have come across this volume. On the surface, the Off the Record Guide to Walt Disney's Great Mouse Detective sounds fantastic! A book about the making of this film is long overdue and would be welcomed with open arms and wallets. But let's take a closer look.

We suspected this book was bogus from the start, but as a cataloguer and reviewer of Great Mouse Detective merchandise, we thought it was necessary to see it with our own eyes, if only to inform the public. More...
