Disney Afternoon DVDs -- Where's the Rest of the Story?

Last week, I promised you three Disney TV shows that got cheated on DVD. Although they had DVD releases, the full series was not included. Each of these gems has episodes missing, a disgraceful treatment of both the series and the fans.

Darkwing Duck

The Terror that Flaps in the Night, DW is a feathered super-hero bedeviled by cool villains and his own ego.

Kim Possible

Teenage cheerleader turned crime-fighter Kim Possible travels the world to foil the baddies and still manages to keep her grades up.

Adventures of the Gummi Bears

This show gets the worst treatment of all, with only one volume of cartoons available instead of two. There are a lot more adventures in Gummi Glen for fans to enjoy, if only Disey would cooperate.

We should also mention Chip 'n' Dale's Rescue Rangers, which, although recently granted a complete series release, is limited to Blu-Ray only, a cheesy way of dissing fans with only a standard DVD player. But, it's better than nothing.

Top 5 Non-Disney Animated Films

I'm a huge Disney fan, so you can bet I say that Disney animation is the best, bar none. But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate other animated movies. These are my top 5:

#5 Home

Most of the success of this movie is in the aliens: the Boov. Both their way of looking at the world and their speech patterns are so entertaining, you can't help but smile at pretty much everything they do.

#4 Lord of the Rings

An acquired taste, perhaps, and overshadowed by Peter Jackson's outstanding trilogy. But there will always be a warm place in my heart for the first film of the Tolkein masterpiece. Again, rotoscoping...oy! The character design is awesome in almost every case, though, and the dialogue sticks more closely to the book than Jackson's. Sure, it's a story without an ending, but we Tolkien fans know how it turns out.

#3 Flushed Away

No one could be more surprised than I at how good this movie is. I've seen the Wallace and Gromit movies, and they're good, but I'm no fan of the Aardman character design. And yet, the character of Roddy has a captivating charm that makes you really want to know how his story will turn out. Lots of funny stuff, and the weirdness doesn't cross the line into 'too weird for me' territory.

#2 Megamind

Why? Why do super-villains do it? This movie answers that question with good humor and lots of super-hero tropes, and yet still manages not to dis the genre I love. And Megamind the character has the power to make us root for the villain, even when he's at his most villainous.

#1 Klaus

This Netflix-Original tale of a Kuzco-esque postman in a town where the residents are too busy feuding to mail a letter doesn't sound like a Christmas movie, but just stick with it and you'll find the connection. Watch it any time, not just at Christmas. It's that good.

Black Cauldron Deleted Scene

If you're a fan of The Black Cauldron, you know there aren't many places to go to find behind-the-scenes information. At least you can look at these rare pre-production drawings and imagine how this scene might have gone:

Toy Story 4 Glitches

Now a few glitches from the most recent Toy Story film:

When Woody goes to sleep with Bonnie in the RV, he really sleeps, eyes closed and everything. What if he hadn't woken up in time and was seen that way by Mom or Dad?

Dad announces he's ready to go even though he never took the RV to the garage for repairs.

Toy Story Glitches

Check out these bloopers from the hit Pixar movie Toy Story:

Andy gets a Battleship game for his birthday, but the box is the wrong size.

Bo Peep is fond of leaving lip prints on Woody's face. Does she borrow Andy's mom's lipstick, or just use red crayon?

Woody's been Andy's favorite toy "since kindergarten." That makes it sound like Andy's been out of kindergarten for some time. Yet he still writes the word "bank" on a box with a backwards "n". Or does he keep his cardboard boxes to play with for years?

Buzz thinks Andy's bed is a spongy planetary surface, but moments later reveals that he can fly around "this room."

The debris from Combat Carl seems to fly awfully far, considering the size of the explosion.

The smear is immediately gone from Buzz's helmet.

That slime drink dispenser at Pizza Planet must make an awful mess on the floor every day.

New Ludwig Von Drake Video

This video was created to instruct Disney shareholders in how to vote in the annual business meeting. True, it only features re-used animation, but it's still worth a look, as is anything relating to Professor Ludwig Von Drake.

Prep & Landing Glitches

Here are some bloopers from the Disney featurette Prep & Landing:

Lanny's pile of Christmas lights are multicolored, but when they're hooked up to Wayne's beacon, they are all white lights.

The Elves start their party at 9:00 hours, according to the caption; that should read "0900 hours" or "9:00", not both.

Why does Magee give Lanny that fruitcake? She didn't draw his name in the Secret Santa exchange.

Once Upon a Studio

For those who wished they could take the time to examine the Disney short Once Upon a Studio frame by frame, we can't help you with that. But we can post this picture of the final photo for you to study at your leisure.

Too small, I know. But it's the best I could do on this blog. So to help you find my favourites from The Great Mouse Detective, here's a close-up of the right side of the photo. There are Basil, Dawson, and Olivia on Susie's bumper, Ratigan on the fender, and Fidget in front of Mr. Smee.

Next is a larger shot of Basil, Dawson, and Olivia from a different scene, followed by Ratigan about to get his just desserts during the final credits.

The blight that keeps the fish away from the island doesn't affect the mantas.

Chief Tui should've told Moana the sad story of his past years a long time earlier; it might possibly keep his daughter from trying to sail away.

Zootopia Glitches

Check out the glitches from the animated feature Zootopia:

If Nick has been making $200 per day for twenty years, that's $73,000 per year, tax-free. Why is he living under a bridge?

The limo where Judy and Nick find Mr. Big's CDs and monogrammed glassware is at a rental company. Does Mr. Big store his personal limo there? Or does he stock all the cars at the rental car agency with his personal belongings?

Nick once sold Mr. Big a rug he claimed was made from wool, but was actually skunk fur. Either way, that's the equivalent for us of making a rug from human hair. Doesn't anybody find this the least bit disturbing?

Ralph jumps to Hero's Duty as the arcade opens. He goes through one game, and then it's already closing time.

How does Vanellope get her tooth fixed? It's not like she has a magic hammer.

Sour Bill claims that if the Sugar Rush game resets, then Vanellope won't be a glitch any more. Not true; she retains her glitching ability. More Wreck-It Ralph glitches:

Maybe you've played the board game called Wingspan, in which players compete for bird cards of various species to fill up their boards and gain victory points. But I'll bet you haven't seen this card, created by a Disney Afternoon fan:

Scooby-Doo Glitches from Nowhere to Hyde

We've added some new bloopers for this episode, like:

This episode takes place in the gang's home town (note how Freddy comments they'd better head home). There is an alligator-filled swamp nearby, which leads us to believe they live somewhere in the south. Yet in Decoy for a Dognapper, their home town is near a desert pueblo.

We see a book titled Origin of Species, although the actual title, if it's the book we're all thinking of, is On the Origin of Species. There is also an even longer subtitle, but that might not be shown on the spine. More...
