Great Mouse Detective Books

I am a great fan of Disney coffee table books. Sadly, there has never been a "Making of..." or "Art of..." book published for Disney's Great Mouse Detective. When your favourite film is one of Disney's Forgotten Few, you have to make do with a mention or photo here and there instead of a complete volume. And I've bought many a book just hoping there would be a page or two concerning my fave. Sometimes I'm rewarded, sometimes disappointed.

Here is a list of Disney books that contain, in my humble opinion, significant Great Mouse Detective content. Enough, at least, to please this fan.

Disney Who's Who (any edition)

Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters (any edition)

My Very First Disney ABC Word Book

Disney Dossiers

Disney Treasury of Children's Classics

The Ultimate Disney Trivia Book, vol. 1

Drawn to Life: 20 Golden Years of Disney Master Classics, vol. 1

The Disney Villain

Mouse in Transition

Mouse Under Glass

Once Upon a Studio

For those who wished they could take the time to examine the Disney short Once Upon a Studio frame by frame, we can't help you with that. But we can post this picture of the final photo for you to study at your leisure.

Too small, I know. But it's the best I could do on this blog. So to help you find my favourites from The Great Mouse Detective, here's a close-up of the right side of the photo. There are Basil, Dawson, and Olivia on Susie's bumper, Ratigan on the fender, and Fidget in front of Mr. Smee.

Next is a larger shot of Basil, Dawson, and Olivia from a different scene, followed by Ratigan about to get his just desserts during the final credits.

Ratigan To Join the Ranks of Disney's Villainous Board Game

If you haven't played Disney's Villainous boardgame, you should definitely give it a go. Very few games with a licensed theme play as well as this one.

Players choose one of four famous villains, each with their own board and goal. Ursula seeks Triton's crown and trident, while the Queen of Hearts tries for a perfect croquet shot. Jafar must find the lamp and enslave Genie, Capt. Hook needs to defeat Peter Pan, and Maleficent seeks to place a curse on all the land. Prince John just wants tax money.

While you work at your goals, other players hinder you by playing hero cards on your board. Which proves there is no honor among thieves.

I expect to receive the first Expansion Pack for my birthday, featuring Hades, the Wicked Queen, and Dr. Facilier. But the real news, for me, at any rate, is the recently-announced second Expansion Pack. Then I will finally have Professor Ratigan! Oh, and Scar and Yzma, too. But Ratigan means an entire game devoted to my favourite film, with game board, playing piece, and two decks of cards themed to The Great Mouse Detective. Oh, bliss!

I certainly hope Disney continues to add to the villainous villains of Villainous. I will welcome Lady Tremaine, Rourke, Clayton, Shere Khan, Madam Mim, Ratcliffe, McLeach, John Silver, Alameda Slim, Edgar, Sykes, Shan Yu, Frollo, Cruella, Medusa, the Horned King...but nobody can top Ratigan, the World's Greatest Criminal Mind!

Identify This Disney Collectible

This item was listed on eBay as a model kit. Now, I don't think there has ever been a model kit made from The Great Mouse Detective; this looks more like a maquette to me. Alas, I didn't win the auction, so I can't give you anything more than these pictures, but any information you have will be appreciated.
You may have noticed that Ratigan's tail is missing, which might have given the seller the idea that this was a model kit. Do maquette's come apart like this? Are they created in pieces? Surely someone out there knows more than I do on this subject.

The Great Mouse Detective on IMDB

The Internet Movie Data Base is a wonderful online resource for movie information, but its changeable nature makes it necessary to record the content of its plot synopsis for The Great Mouse Detective, as written by Whatsits Galore, here for posterity.

The year is 1897. The place is London. The setting is not our world, but the world of England's mouse population, who live lives not so different from ours, in the mouse holes and basements of the British Empire.

Hiram Flaversham, a master toymaker, is kidnapped on his daughter Olivia's birthday. The young girl has no one to turn to for help, so she strikes out on her own, seeking the greatest detective in all mousedom, Basil of Baker Street. More...
