Love and the Private Eye

There was one special episode of the old tv show Love, American Style. Special to a cartoon-geek like myself, anyway. Love and the Private Eye premiered on Jan. 28, 1972 as part of Season 3 of the series. An obvious pilot for an animated series that never materialized, this Hanna-Barbera cartoon features the voice of Richard Dawson as Melvin Danger, a bumbling private eye who manages to solve the case in spite of his best efforts.

I always wished it would become a regular series with more adventures of Danger, but it was not to be. You can't even get it on DVD, since season 3 of Love, American Style has yet to be released. But you can view it, at least temporarily, on YouTube in its entirety.

YouTube videos have a tendency to disappear without warning, so watch this one while you can.

Agents of SHIELD -- Final Season Predictions

Watching the final season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. started me thinking about how it all will end. And that led to these ideas, which I thought I should record, just to look back later and see if I was right. Predicting a series known for its surprises (Ward is Hydra) won't be easy, but I can't help thinking that, when the dust has settled, we will see:

Mac will step down as Director and retire from S.H.I.E.L.D. altogether.

Yo-Yo will lose her powers and... More...

The Six Flavors of Quark

When scientists talk about the "flavors of quarks" they are referring to subatomic particles theorized to make up protons and neutrons. That, however, is boring. To many of us, at least. How much more fun would it be to explore the six flavors of Commander Adam Quark from the fan-favorite sci-fi limited series Quark? The Galaxy Ad Infinitum! More...

Scooby-Doo Meets Dick Van Dyke

Actor Dick Van Dyke will be forever young in this episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies. Here are some glitches to remember:

Daphne and Velma each use the wrong voices.

Scooby's nose temporarily turns brown. In another scene, he loses his spots.

In the tunnel, Shaggy and Scooby try to run away but a gate falls and blocks the way, forcing them to go on and find the villainous strong man. The question is, who dropped the gate? The strong man? He wanted the gang to leave, and besides, he didn't even know they were in the tunnel. Maybe he was closing it to keep them from finding his lair and accidentally locked them in.

Daphne loses her lipstick. Twice. More...

Logan's Run Glitches

These glitches are from the television series Logan's Run, not the film of the same name:

The opening narration tells us that computers took over and ruled the City of Domes, yet we know it is governed by the Council of Elders.

The wires are visible during Carousel.

Logan could use his weapon's stun setting to simply freeze his fellow Sandman, rather than kill him.

When Logan and Jessica exit the City, they see a barren wilderness on every side and choose a random direction. Do they really expect to reach Sanctuary this way? Is this what all the other Runners do? If so, it's no wonder our heroes never find what they're looking for.

One wonders how Runners even know of Sanctuary, since no one ever returns to the City of Domes to tell them about it. More...

Scooby-Doo Meets Speed Buggy Glitches

Two cartoon icons meet in an episode filled with glitches: Upon reaching Winona, the gang stand in front of a boarded-up hotel. The next morning, the windows are no longer boarded up.

Shaggy and Freddy spend the night in sleeping bags laid out side by side, but when Shag is shown a moment later, Freddy's nowhere in sight.

Daphne gives us her famous Velma impression.

Fred smashes up the front end of the Mystery Machine, but when Tinker is repairing it, he has the engine in the back. Now it is sometimes necessary to remove an engine to work on it, but it would take way too much unnecessary effort to move it into the back of the van.

All through this episode, Mark looks Hispanic, but in the Speed Buggy TV show he looked white. Actually, he was originally intended to be a Latino in the series, but somehow that idea went by the wayside. More...

New Jonny Quest Glitches: Mystery of the Lizard Men

We added new glitches for this episode of the classic Jonny Quest cartoon series:

The good guys often call out their plans just before carrying them out, but the villains never seem to notice.

The anchor on Race's boat isn't attached to a rope.

Perhaps the guy manning the laser should have skipped the escaping prisoners and aimed for the rocket; he might've been able to complete the villainous mission after all. More...

Scooby-Doo Meets the Three Stooges

Scooby and the gang met the comedy trio twice. These glitches are from The Ghost of the Red Baron episode:

Moe and Larry switch voices.

Although the Red Baron pulls the ladder off the windmill, it is later shown intact.

The Red Baron even uses a German accent when he talks to himself. The guy really gets in character.

How do the Stooges get in the barn with Freddy, Daphne, and Velma?

The mini plane continually changes in size. More...

Scooby-Doo Meets Josie and the Pussycats

Two of Hanna-Barbera's greatest cartoons meet, but not without glitches like these:

Freddy tells Valerie to deactivate the trap, but Velma steps in and flips the switch.

Shaggy turns the crank the wrong way; he's lowering the trap, not raising it.

In a far shot of all the kids together, neither Josie nor Daphne move their lips while speaking.

The canvas, though nailed to the deck, slides across the floor when Sebastian crawls under it.

Velma grows even more suspicious of Lance Goodwin, pondering his resemblance to Capt. Scavenger. Which, incidentally is nil. They don't look at all alike. If that's your idea of deduction, then arrest Capt. Canaby, who looks a lot more like the ghost than Goodwin. More...

New Jonny Quest Glitches -- House of the Seven Gargoyles

We've added new mistakes for the classic Jonny Quest episode:

Dietrich is very foolish to shoo that bird away when he can plainly hear there are people below.

Erikson talks about "those attacks on me." Have there been more than one?

When the Professor mentions falling ice, Quest reacts as if he didn't know what he was talking about. From the glaciers, Mister Brilliant Scientist. More...

Scooby-Doo Meets Cass Elliot

Scooby and the gang meet Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas, to solve a mystery. A mystery filled with glitches. Here is a sampling:

Piles of peanuts and other foods on the floor are serious health code violations.

The same switch on the same machine is used to work the ceiling conveyor belt and the secret door.

Scooby watches as Shaggy is snagged by a hook and dropped over a vat. When Freddy asks where Shaggy is, Scooby replies, "Beats me."

Some of the candy machines are very dangerous, like the jawbreaker maker that shoots candy out like bullets.

You might have to pause it to spot this one, but when Scooby taps his head to indicate to the audience what he thinks of Shaggy's brain-power, the dog has five limbs. More...

Brisco County, Jr. and the Power of the Orb

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. introduced us to The Orb, a mysterious spherical object with uncanny powers. The Orb was eventually revealed to be a man-made electromagnetic wave-particle net that captures energy at certain nodal intersections of the space/time grid. Although complete details have never been revealed, many of the orb's various powers were demonstrated throughout the series. These facts have been collected here, giving the most comprehensive guide to the powers of "that Orb thang" currently available.

The Orbs form a trinity, but still function after one is destroyed. Senior Spirit

The Orb hates evil; if evil persons try to use The Orb, it eventually ages them to dust. Pilot, Fountain of Youth, Bye Bly

Getting stabbed with a rod turns you to dust. Pilot, Bye Bly

Jonny Quest Glitches: The Monster in the Monastery

We have added new glitches from the classic TV series Jonny Quest:

Of course Jonny's not the murderous sort, but considering he's trapped by a thug who plans to gun him down, he might put those arrows to better use than just spreading oil on the stairs.

While he watches his foe roll down the stairs, Jonny's lips move continually, like he's talking to himself, though we hear no sound. More...

Notes on the Dating of Disney's Tarzan

The Legend of Tarzan animated TV series gives some new insight into the dating of Disney's Tarzan. There are several indicators that may suggest an approximate year, but one reference is absolutely definitive: the sign on Dumont's trading post which states that it was "est. 1912".

Even allowing for the possibility of time passing between the end of the movie and the beginning of the series, this firmly places the characters in the post-Victorian world. How, then, can this date be reconciled with the clues in the animated feature? Jane's dress is clearly Victorian, and she anticipates meeting the Queen herself, who died in 1901. More...

Brisco County, Jr. -- Cowboy of the Future

Brisco is always looking for "the coming thing," whatever's new in the way of science and technology. He doesn't seem to realize that he himself is the coming thing in many ways. No mere bounty hunter, Brisco adds to his considerable skill at shooting, roping, and tracking several less-conventional abilities. At least, less conventional for a cowboy. That's what makes Brisco County, Jr. a western hero for the future, and for all time.

Here is a list of some of Brisco's more unusual characteristics:

  • English major with a minor in theater
    The Orb Scholar
  • Knows Morse Code
    High Treason
  • Speaks Latin
    Pilot
  • Speaks Chinese
    Fountain of Youth

Brisco County, Jr. & the History of The Orb

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. introduced us to The Orb, a mysterious spherical object with uncanny powers. The Orb was eventually revealed to be a man-made electromagnetic wave-particle net that captures energy at certain nodal intersections of the space/time grid. Although complete details have never been revealed, many significant bits of information about the Orb were presented throughout the series. These facts have been collected here, giving the most comprehensive origin & history of "that Orb thang" currently available.

The people of 5502 A.D. created three Orbs and sent them back in time to aid in the advancement of mankind. John Bly used a time machine to travel back from his year of 2506 to 1894 and steal the Orbs, which he then brought to the future and used to rule the world in a 2000-year reign of terror. Bye Bly

Karina traveled back to 1894 to recover the Orbs and prevent Bly's world conquest. Bye Bly

The first Orb was found in a crater in Arizona and later procured by Bly. The scorch patterns on it were consistent with those found on meteorites. Senior Spirit More...

Alexandra Cabot: Threat or Menace?

For a small group just starting out, the Pussycats already have their own entourage. They always travel with their manager Alex, plus Alan, their roadie, but why do they bring Alexandra along? She doesn't hold any position or perform any function that we can see. And she isn't very good company, either. More...

Jonny Quest Glitches

There are many bloopers in this great old animated series, like these from the episode Mystery of the Lizard Men:

It is unnecessary to board the fishing boat and attack the crew personally when you plan to blow up the whole boat with a laser.

The man in the hospital looks nothing like either of the men on the boat.

Roberts learns from Corbin that Race has been assigned to guard Jonny, but then is surprised when Corbin says the arrangement is for security reasons. That's what 'guard' means.

The footprints are too small to come from the Lizard Man's flippers. More...
